Epigraph

“Forever, O Lord, Your Word is settled in heaven.”Psalm 119:89

Introduction: The Power of “It Is Written”

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He overcame the devil not with human reasoning, nor with angelic intervention, but with three words: “It is written” (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10).

This declaration reveals that the Word of God is the final authority, the believer’s weapon, and the eternal truth.

The phrase “It is written” means:

  • God has spoken.
  • His Word is binding.
  • His promises cannot fail.

This book explores the scriptural foundation, implications, applications, and illustrations of living by the written Word of God.

WHAT IS WRITTEN?

The phrase “It is written” appears repeatedly in Scripture, pointing us to the eternal authority of God’s Word. What is written in the Scriptures is not the opinion of men but the unchanging voice of God recorded for all generations.

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He overcame Satan by declaring, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). The authority of His victory rested not in debate, but in what was already written.

The psalmist declared, “Forever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven” (Psalm 119:89). What God has written cannot be erased by time, altered by culture, or overturned by men. Heaven and earth will pass away, but His Word will never pass away (Matthew 24:35).

To know what is written is to know the will of God. To believe what is written is to walk in faith. To declare what is written is to enforce God’s truth against the lies of the enemy.

Therefore, every believer must anchor life, prayer, and destiny on the eternal Word of God—for what is written is what will stand forever.

WHO WROTE IT ?

The Bible is the inspired Word of God. Though it was penned by men, its true Author is the Holy Spirit.

Scripture says:

  • “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).
  • “Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:21).

Moses wrote the Law (Exodus 24:4), David wrote psalms (Psalm 72:20), prophets like Isaiah and Jeremiah recorded God’s messages (Isaiah 1:1; Jeremiah 30:2), and apostles like Paul, Peter, and John wrote letters to the Church (Romans 1:1; 1 Peter 1:1; Revelation 1:1–3). Yet behind them all was one Author—God Himself.

Jesus confirmed this when He said, “Have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God…” (Matthew 22:31). What was written by men was actually spoken by God.

Therefore, the Bible is not a human invention but the eternal Word of the Living God. Men were simply vessels chosen to record His truth.

WHY WAS IT WRITTEN ?

 A. To know the things freely given unto us

[12]Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

B. For all round healing of the people

[20]He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.

C. To lighten up His people

[8]The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.

D. To deliver his people

Psalms 107:20
[20]He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.

E. Written for our patience, comfort and hope

[4]For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

[10]Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.

The Scriptures were written to reveal God’s will, guide humanity, and point us to salvation through Christ. The Bible is not just a historical record—it is God’s covenant document with His people.

Paul states clearly:

  • “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Romans 15:4).
  • “Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come” (1 Corinthians 10:11).

The purpose of what was written includes:

  1. Instruction in righteousness – to teach us how to live according to God’s will (2 Timothy 3:16).
  2. Revelation of Christ – to point to Jesus as the promised Messiah (John 5:39; Luke 24:27).
  3. Guidance for life“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105).
  4. Faith-building“These are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name” (John 20:31).
  5. Hope and comfort – to strengthen us in trials and remind us of God’s promises (Romans 15:4).

In short, it was written so that man may know God, walk with Him, avoid destruction, and inherit eternal life through His Son.

CHAPTER ONE: The Authority of the Written Word

Scripture: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”2 Timothy 3:16

Implications:

  • The Word is supreme over culture, tradition, and human philosophy.
  • To disbelieve or ignore Scripture is to reject God’s authority.

Applications:

  • Begin every decision with: What is written?
  • Measure every prophecy, teaching, or dream by the written Word.

Illustration:
Just as a constitution governs a nation, the written Word governs the Kingdom of God.

CHAPTER TWO: “It Is Written” as a Weapon of Warfare

Scripture: “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.”2 Corinthians 10:4

Implications:

  • Without Scripture, the believer is defenseless in spiritual battles.
  • Victory comes by confessing the written Word in faith.

Applications:

  • In times of fear, declare: “It is written: God has not given me the spirit of fear.” (2 Timothy 1:7).
  • In sickness, declare: “It is written: By His stripes I am healed.” (Isaiah 53:5).

Illustration:
A soldier without a weapon is easily defeated. Likewise, a Christian who neglects the Word is vulnerable to the enemy.

CHAPTER THREE: The Eternal Nature of the Word

Scripture: “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”Matthew 24:35

  • God’s Word is eternal, unchanging, and indestructible.
  • Kings and empires have fallen, but Scripture remains.

Implications:

  • Building life on anything else is sinking sand.
  • God’s promises never expire.

Applications:

  • Hold on to the Word even when circumstances contradict it.
  • Teach your children the eternal truths of Scripture.

Illustration:
Generations rise and fall, yet Psalm 23 comforts hearts thousands of years later—proof that the Word endures.

CHAPTER FOUR: Living by the Word

Scripture: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”Matthew 4:4

  • Bread sustains the body; the Word sustains the spirit.
  • Israel survived the wilderness by God’s Word and manna.

Implications:

  • Spiritual malnutrition comes from neglecting the Bible.
  • A Word-filled life is a victorious life.

Applications:

  • Read, study, meditate, and practice the Word daily.
  • Start each morning with a Scripture declaration.

Illustration:
Just as a car runs on fuel, a believer runs on the Word. Without it, we stop moving.

CHAPTER FIVE: The Word and Your Identity

Scripture: “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.”2 Corinthians 5:17

Implications:

  • Our identity is not in feelings, background, or failure but in the Word.

Applications:

  • Daily affirm what God says about you: righteous, healed, blessed, victorious.

Illustration:
Like a mirror reflects appearance, Scripture reflects your true identity in Christ.

CHAPTER SIX: Speaking the Written Word

Scripture: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”Proverbs 18:21

  • The Word must be spoken to release its power.
  • Ezekiel prophesied to dry bones, and they lived (Ezekiel 37:4–10).

Implications:

  • Silent believers are defeated believers.
  • The Word in your mouth becomes a weapon in your situation.

Applications:

  • Speak Scripture over your health, business, marriage, and nation.

Illustration:
A seed grows only when planted. The Word grows when spoken.

CHAPTER SEVEN: Guarding Against Misuse of the Word

Scripture: “Rightly dividing the word of truth.”2 Timothy 2:15

  • Satan misquoted Scripture to tempt Jesus (Matthew 4:6).
  • Some twist the Word for gain (2 Peter 3:16).

Implications:

  • Out-of-context use of Scripture brings error and deception.
  • Believers must discern truth from distortion.

Applications:

  • Always study passages in context.
  • Compare Scripture with Scripture.

Illustration:
A prescription wrongly applied can harm instead of heal. The same is true with Scripture.

CHAPTER EIGHT: Victory Through the Word

Scripture: “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony.”Revelation 12:11

  • Victory is tied to the written Word believed and declared.
  • David defeated Goliath by standing on God’s covenant promises.

Implications:

  • The Word guarantees triumph in every battle.

Applications:

  • Anchor every prayer and action on what is written.
  • Use the Word to cancel fear, doubt, and satanic lies.

Illustration:
When storms came, only the house built on the rock stood firm (Matthew 7:24–25). The rock is the Word.

Conclusion: It Is Written—It Is Finished

Jesus’ last words on the cross were “It is finished” (John 19:30). The victory of redemption was sealed, and the believer’s confidence rests in the written Word of God.

To live by “It is written” is to live by faith, power, and victory—until we see the Word Himself, Jesus Christ, face to face.
