FORGIVENESS AND HEALING IN CHRIST

Text:
"And the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick: the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity."
1. The Root of Sickness is Sin
Sickness did not exist in God’s perfect creation. It came as a result of man’s fall. When Adam sinned, death and sickness entered the world.
Isaiah 33:24:
This is a prophetic promise of the redeemed community where sin is forgiven and sickness is no more. The message ties forgiveness and healing together as inseparable blessings found in Christ.
“Cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life… In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”
Adam’s sin brought death, pain, and disease into the world.
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”
This shows that the root cause of sickness is sin. That is why Isaiah 33:24 links healing with forgiveness: “The inhabitant shall not say, I am sick: the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity.”
Just as a tree’s rotten fruit comes from its root, sickness is a fruit of the root called sin. Until the root is dealt with, the fruit will keep showing up.
2. Christ Bore Both Sin and Sickness
Jesus came to deal not only with our sins but also with sickness, disease, and pain.
The same cross that forgives also heals. Don’t accept one and reject the other.
In Matthew 9, a paralyzed man was brought to Jesus. Jesus first said, *“Your sins are forgiven,”* then healed him. He showed that He came to carry both sin and sickness.
Think of a hospital bill. If someone pays your bill in full, you don’t keep paying. Jesus has paid for both your forgiveness and your healing on the cross.
When Jesus healed the lame man at the pool of Bethesda (John 5:8–14), He told him later, *“Sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.”* Forgiveness and healing are connected.
Forgiveness without healing is like fixing a car engine but leaving the tires flat. Healing without forgiveness is like inflating the tires but ignoring the broken engine. God offers **complete wholeness**.
“Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.”
The Hebrew words here are important:
“Griefs” = Choli → sicknesses, diseases.
This prophecy was fulfilled in Christ.
“When the even was come, they brought unto Him many that were possessed with devils: and He cast out the spirits with His word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.”
“Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”
Here we see the double work of redemption—forgiveness of sins and healing of diseases—secured by the stripes of Jesus.
3. Forgiveness and Healing are Twin Blessings
Scripture consistently presents forgiveness of sin and healing of the body as inseparable blessings of God.
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases.”
“And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”
“Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (He saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.”
Jesus demonstrated that the same authority that forgives sins also heals diseases.
4. The Kingdom Fulfillment
Isaiah 33:24 is a prophetic glimpse of the redeemed state—a place where no one will ever say, “I am sick.” This promise finds its ultimate fulfillment in Christ and will be perfected in eternity.
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
“In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”
This is the believer’s final inheritance: an eternity free from sin, sickness, sorrow, and pain.
5. Application for Today
Walk in the assurance of forgiveness because Christ bore our sins. We can confidently declare and claim God’s promise of healing.
Many believers carry guilt, saying, “Maybe God will not heal me because of my past.” But the same cross that forgives your sins also heals your body. You don’t need to earn it; you only need to believe and receive it.
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
Because Christ bore our sicknesses, we can lay hold of healing:
“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”
As we await the final fulfillment of kingdom blessings, we live in the reality of forgiveness and walk in divine health, claiming God’s promises with faith.
🔥 Conclusion
Isaiah 33:24 assures us that in God’s kingdom, forgiveness and healing go hand in hand. Jesus Christ, through His atoning sacrifice, bore both our sins and our sicknesses. Therefore, we can walk in the confidence of forgiven iniquities and healed bodies.
It is a prophetic declaration that forgiveness of sins and healing of sickness are inseparable blessings of redemption. Christ bore both our sins and our infirmities on the cross. As believers, we can live forgiven, healed, and hopeful of the day when sickness and sin will exist no more.
In Christ, forgiveness and healing walk hand in hand. Imagine a prisoner freed from his cell, but still wearing chains. That’s what it looks like when we claim forgiveness but don’t embrace healing. Christ came to remove both the prison and the chains.
Isaiah 33:24 is God’s promise: *No more sin. No more sickness.*
